Solar self-consumption in Luxembourg

Self-consumption means using the electricity produced by your own solar panels directly, rather than feeding all of it into the grid.It lowers your electricity bill and reduces grid dependence, while remaining compatible withselling any unused surplus. Since 4 January 2026, self-consumption has even become a condition for theKlimabonus grant.

Why the self-consumption rate varies so much from household to household

A household present during the day (remote work, retirement) uses a larger share of its output directly than one that's away during the day. Sizing the installation correctly and, where relevant, adding a battery can increase this rate. In practice, a system without a battery typically self-consumes 30-40% of its output; a well-sized battery can push that to 60-70%.

Do you need a battery to self-consume?

No: direct self-consumption (without storage) works as soon as the installation is in place. A battery increases the share of electricity you self-consume by shifting the surplus produced during the day to later use — see ourstorage guide to assess whether it's worth it in your case, or our solar panel prices page to estimate the budget.
